John completes reading exercises with great success and he has taken big steps forward during the course. He reliably and quickly identifies the gist of texts by skim-reading. John accurately pinpoints important areas of text by scanning and he shows full understanding of texts when reading intensively.
John's overall command of writing in French is superb and his progress has been rapid in this area. He constructs readable, coherent French sentences and he spells very few words incorrectly. His work is diligently punctuated.

John is a gifted speaker of French and he has become much more proficient since the beginning of the course. He is very careful to avoid errors in his speaking and maintains a beautifully fluent style at the same time. His clear pronunciation makes his spoken French easy to understand.
In the area of grammar, John performs impressively and he has engaged successfully with new material. He has an in-depth knowledge of many grammatical rules and constructions. He also incorporates the structures he has learnt into his writing and speaking with excellent accuracy.
John has an outstanding vocabulary for his level of French and he has learnt a great many new words during lessons. The excellent breadth of his vocabulary enables him to cope in a variety of contexts. He is also extremely careful to use the words he knows appropriately.
John has been an enthusiastic member of the class and he worked extremely hard during lessons. He took great care over his homework and he was a lively participant in activities with other students.
Kate (a student of mixed
abilities)
Kate's performance in reading has been creditable and she has slowly strengthened her appreciation of French text. She can understand the main theme of some texts by skim-reading. Kate is able to scan passages for important details but she ought to practise reading texts carefully to understand their meaning.
Kate has been writing very competently in recent weeks but she still has much to do to reach her potential. Nonetheless, she often constructs readable, coherent sentences and she spells words accurately for the most part. However, she does not yet punctuate her work with sufficient regard to the rules.
Listening exercises at this level are very manageable for Kate and her expertise has grown during the course. She quickly understands the basic meaning of a listening script and she must now pay more attention to important details. Kate is able to deal with a variety of topics in listening activities.
Kate produces reasonable spoken French and she has improved measurably since the beginning of the course. She achieves some accuracy in her speaking while keeping up a measure of fluency. Her spoken French is normally pronounced clearly.
Kate is not familiar with enough grammar at this level, though she has absorbed new material effectively. Her knowledge and understanding of different structures needs to be increased. However, she is able to make use of what she knows in productive tasks.
Kate has a sizeable vocabulary for this stage of her learning and she is adding new words to it each week. Her vocabulary has sufficient breadth to make most topics accessible to her in class. She is also able to deploy words accurately and appropriately when communicating.
Kate
has a positive approach to her learning and she concentrated hard
during lessons. Unfortunately, she did not hand in homework of a
satisfactory quality but she was always fully involved in
whole-class activities.
Stephen (a weak student)
Stephen is not a confident reader at this level and he has made little headway in this element of his French. He cannot yet skim texts quickly to pick up their overall themes. That said, Stephen is capable of scanning simpler passages for important details but he ought to practise reading texts carefully to understand their meaning.
Stephen's overall command of writing in French is quite low for this level and he has not improved significantly in this aspect of his learning. Nonetheless, he is working towards greater coherence in writing but his spelling requires a good deal of improvement. He should also check his punctuation more thoroughly.
Listening has been a challenging area for Stephen but he has sharpened his techniques little by little. However, he often struggles to understand the overall meaning of listening scripts and he must practise answering questions about particular details.
Stephen is challenged by speaking activities but he has improved steadily since the beginning of the course. Despite that, he needs to increase the accuracy of his speaking and keep up satisfactory fluency at the same time. He should also take every opportunity to improve his pronunciation.

Stephen has quite a limited vocabulary for his level of French and he has had trouble increasing the number of words he knows. His vocabulary needs to encompass a more varied range of topics and subjects. On the other hand, he sometimes uses the words he knows in an appropriate and natural way.
Stephen has been a reluctant student and he has lacked concentration in lesson time. More positively, his homework was appropriately completed and he would now benefit from involving himself more in whole-class exercises.
