Michelle
(an excellent student in all areas)
Michelle completes reading exercises with great success and she has
gained much from practising this element of her German. She makes
very effective use of skim-reading to establish the key ideas in a
text. Michelle accurately pinpoints important areas of text by
scanning and she shows full understanding of texts when reading
intensively.
Michelle's writing is very strong and her progress has been rapid in this area. She has a naturally coherent style of writing and she keeps her German largely free from spelling inaccuracies. She is highly attentive to the rules of punctuation and uses them appropriately.
Michelle is a highly skilled listener and she has taken full advantage of every chance to practise. She can easily understand what a listening script is about and she pays excellent attention to specific details. Michelle is comfortable with a very wide range of listening material.
Michelle produces excellent spoken German and she has become much more proficient since the beginning of the course. She achieves a high level of accuracy in her speaking while keeping up exceptional fluency. She is able to pronounce most words very clearly.
In the area of grammar, Michelle performs impressively and she has improved greatly in recent lessons. She has an in-depth knowledge of many grammatical rules and constructions. She also incorporates the structures she has learnt into her writing and speaking with excellent accuracy.
Michelle's superb vocabulary is a very useful element of her German and she is adding new words to it every day. The range of different topics her vocabulary includes is impressive. She is also able to deploy words accurately and appropriately when communicating.
Michelle has approached the course with great enthusiasm and she worked diligently during lesson time. She handed in high quality homework and she was a lively participant in activities with other students.
Will (a student of mixed
abilities)
Will has performed reading tasks well in this class and he is gradually strengthening his ability in this element of his German. He is able to understand the main gist of a text by skim-reading it. Will currently has difficulty scanning passages for important details but he interprets what he reads with insight.
Will's writing is relatively weak at present but his skills in this area have increased slowly but surely. His written German sometimes flows quite naturally but he ought to pay greater attention to spelling words accurately. His punctuation would also benefit from more study.
Listening exercises at this level are very manageable for Will and he has made good use of opportunities to practise. He can understand the basic meaning of easier listening scripts and he competently answers questions about particular details. Will can comprehend a wide range of audio material.
Will expresses himself well when speaking and he is progressing at a good rate. Despite that, he needs to avoid basic errors in his speaking without losing his fluency of style. Most of his spoken German is pronounced correctly.
Will is not familiar with enough grammar at this level, though he has gained from recent lessons on the topic. In spite of this, he needs to understand grammatical rules and structures more securely. He must also try to incorporate the structures he has learnt more accurately into his writing and speaking.
Will has developed a fair-sized vocabulary for this level and he is quickly adding new words to it. His vocabulary is sufficiently broad to encompass a modest range of topics. He also takes some care to use the words he knows appropriately.
Will is a well motivated student and he worked quite energetically from the beginning. Unfortunately, he did not take much care over his homework but he made helpful contributions during class activities.
Chris (a weak student)
Chris's reading skills are in need of further consolidation and he has not developed his reading techniques much during the course. In spite of this, he makes some use of skim-reading to pick up the key ideas of texts. Chris currently finds scanning for detail challenging and he requires practice analysing texts in depth.
Chris's overall command of writing in German is quite low for this level but his skills in this area have increased slowly but surely. That said, he must practise in order to make his writing more coherent and he should spend a little more time ensuring he uses correct spelling. He should also check his punctuation more thoroughly.
Listening exercises at this level are manageable for Chris but he must redouble his efforts in order to make better progress. He can understand the basic meaning of easier listening scripts and he should now try to note specific details more reliably. Furthermore, Chris is not yet comfortable listening to texts about unfamiliar topics.
Chris produces limited spoken German and he has improved little in the last few weeks. He needs to increase the accuracy of his speaking while practising to develop a more natural pace and rhythm. A little more study of pronunciation would also be worthwhile.
In the area of grammar, Chris is struggling and he has not improved much in recent lessons. He needs to know and understand grammatical constructions better. He must also try to incorporate the structures he has learnt more accurately into his writing and speaking.
Chris has a fair-sized vocabulary for this stage of his learning but he has had trouble increasing the number of words he knows. His vocabulary needs to encompass a more varied range of topics and subjects. He also ought to practise deploying words accurately and appropriately when communicating.
Chris has been a reasonably active member of the class but he has lacked concentration from time to time. He did not take advantage of homework to revise new language and he should try to be more involved in whole-class activities.
